Grand Canyon - Arizona
Descriptive:
The immense size of the Grand Canyon is immediately apparent upon first looking over the rim -- even though from any point only a small portion of the canyon can be seen. The Colorado River is still eroding away the canyon's floor a mile below the rim. The canyon is 9 miles wide and just over 275 miles long. The imposing peaks, canyons, and ravines are all composed of the red rock which dominates the canyon, in its varied hues. Some of the canyon's rocks date back about 4 billion years.
Key locations:
A drive down the West Rim offers spectacular vistas of the canyon and stops at Hermits Rest. From here, it is easy to pick up Bright Angel Trail. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, however, private autos are not permitted on this stretch of road; shuttle buses are provided, and run regularly throughout the day.
The Watchtower at Desert View on the South Rim presents a good vantage point for long vistas down the canyon.
Phantom Ranch is a lodge and campground located at river level in the center of the Park; it is accessible only by mule or horse, raft, or by foot.
Activities:
It is advisable to find a suitable location and sit for a period of time, gazing into the canyon. As the sun's position in the sky changes, fantastic colors dance off of the canyon's walls, reflecting radiantly.
A mule or horseback ride down the canyon's walls is a great way to reach the canyon's inner reaches.
Whitewater rafting presents a thrilling way to tour the canyon. A number of local touring companies, approved by the Park Service, offer trips down the Colorado river. Don't be surprised, however, when the serene stretches turn into rough waters at more than 150 sets of rapids. Trips generally last 1-2 weeks, with campsites strategically located on white, sandy beaches.
A pilot can be hired to fly a helicopter or light plane for an even more dynamic view of the canyon. Check at the Tusayan or the Grand Canyon Airport.
