Crater Lake - Oregon

Descriptive:
Crater Lake has formed in the huge caldera of the long extinct volcano, Mt. Mazama. This serene lake is over 1,900 feet deep, making it the deepest in the U.S.. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the lake, however, is its unbelievably crystal blue waters. Off to one side of the lake is Wizard's island, named such for its resemblance to a wizard's hat.

Key locations:
Rim Drive circles Crater Lake, providing beautiful vistas from many vantage points Approximately half of this loop requires autos to travel one-way only.

Magnificent views can be had from the Watchman, on the west side of the lake, 1,800 feet above the surface of the lake.

The Pinnacles are needlelike spires of pumice. As the water eroded the volcanic debris and washed it into the lake, these spindles of rock remained. Some are as high as 200 feet.

Hillman Peak was split in half when the summit collapsed, but it still remains the highest point on the lake, at 2,000 feet. On the west side of the lake, the peak offers excellent views of Wizard's Island.
